pbxnsip training

Purpose of the Training

Voice over IP is a new technology. In order to be able to install the system successfully in client places, partners need to have a fundamental understanding about VoIP in general and about the pbxnsip product. Therefore it is a good idea to sit together and talk about how to install the product successfully.

The training class is usually also a fun place and a good chance to exchange information about latest IT gear. So be sure that you don't miss it!

The training duration may vary between one and three days. For beginners, we offer an additional introduction day before the main training. This is a good opportunity to get started and get a basic understanding before diving into the detail topics.

Attendants that visit the training qualify for the pbxnsip partner program. Participants get a license that is close to the participation fee.

Training Requirements

Participants should have a stable background in Internet Protocol networking. Terms like TCP, UDP, NAT, DHCP and TLS should be familiar to attendees.

We offer an optional first day where we give a general introduction into VoIP. It will cover networking essentials, SIP overview, and PBX functionalities. If VoIP is new to you then we suggest attending the first day of training.

The 2nd and 3rd days are designed for people that are familiar with VoIP and have used pbxnsip in the past. Attendants should have installed the PBX at least in a demo environment and have a broad overview on the product.

1. Network Essentials

Cover topics like WANs and LAN's, what is DNS, DHCP, and ARP. Get familiar with Wireshark (formerly Ethereal). Discuss VLANs and QOS and how they relate to VoIP. Discuss the PSTN and its history. What is an FXO/FXS port? T1 versus PRI.

2. SIP Overview

Briefly discuss competing VoIP protocols like H.323 and MGCP and why SIP won the protocol standards battle. What is the IETF and the RFC process. Where did SIP come from. Go into the various SIP methods that constitute RFC3261. INVITE, ACK, BYE, CANCEL etc. Tear down the SIP packets. Discuss SDP and CODEC negotiation. B2BUA architecture and the components that make up a VoIP system. Discuss IP phones and IP gateways.

3. PBX Basics

What is a PBX and how did they come about? Discuss essential features like forward, hold, transfer, park, pickup, music on hold. Have a lab portion at the end where we take various IP phones and connect them to the PBX and make some calls and look at them on the packet sniffer.
1. Why VoIP and pbxnsip (1 hour)

Resellers frequently face the question why a customer should use VoIP. This session addresses this question and answers why and when VoIP is better and when pbxnsip can be used. The pbxnsip business model will be explained.

2. New Features in 2.0 (30 minutes)

This session gives a brief overview about the new features that have been added in Version 2. This session is particularly interesting for installers that already know version 1.x.

3. User Experience (1 hour)

It is important that the one who installs the system also understands what the end user can do with the system. This session shows what the end user can do with the phone and how he can access the web interface.

4. Introduction to VoIP and SIP (2 hours)

This session provides an introduction to VoIP and SIP. It explains problems with RTP and NAT and gives a quick introduction into SIP. This will enable listeners to do basic analysis and troubleshooting of the system.

5. Administrator Mode (2 hours)

This session will show how to install the product in Windows and Linux, how to verify that the installation was successful, introduces the domain concept and shows how the system status can be tracked. It also covers topics like music on hold sources and localization.

6. Customization (1 hour)

Resellers frequently need to change the look of the PBX or change email templates. This session will explain how to change the layout and provide additional languages and prompts.
7. Domain Mode (3 hours)

The domain mode contains trunks, dial plans, extensions, star codes and other topics like plug and play. It will explain the different account types in detail. Topics like cell phone integration, Hot Desking or Inbound-Outbound calling are covered.

8. User-Agents (2 hours)

This section is a hands-on session that will show how to set up phones from different vendors. Depending on the audience's demand, devices from Cisco, Grandstream, Linksys, Nokia, Polycom or snom will be installed with the PBX. If available, this installation will use the plug and play mechanism. Attendees welcome to bring their own devices.

9. Trunk installation (1 hour)

This section discusses the installation of various PSTN gateways and service providers. Common pitfalls are discussed. This section is also a hands-on session; attendees are welcome to bring their own devices and ITSP accounts.

10. Roadmap (15 minutes)

It is important to know what features are in the pipeline. This session will discuss what new features are on the implementation list.

11. Questions and Answers (1 hour 45 minutes)

A general question and answer session will conclude the training. If necessary, this session will be open end until the questions have been answered.

We will provide drinks and snacks for lunch. Approximately after each 90 minutes, we will do a 15 minutes refreshment break. After the first day, participants are invited for a common dinner. The classroom will be limited to ten participants.
